A whole new World is opening up for the Automotive Industry - off to new Shores with a Record Number of Participants

The Congress “ELIV 2015“ which took place from 14 -15  October 2015 attracted more than 1,600 participants and more than 120 exhibitors who came to Baden-Baden making it the most successful congress in its entire history of more than 30 years.

At the exhibition in the Kongresshaus Baden-Baden as well as during the 78 lectures held over the two days there was ample opportunity for participants to  get acquainted with the latest electronic trends in the vehicle. The three megatrends Electromobility, Automated Driving and Connected Car were at the top of the agenda and enabler technologies like e.g. vehicle wiring system, software and tools made the programme complete.

In his opening talk in the morning of the first day of the congress, Uwe Michael, Porsche, Chairman of the Programme Committee, introduced the event’s topics to the attendants and highlighted the conference updates that had been made. The most innovative element was of course the ELIV app, which allowed attendants as well as exhibitors to plan their days at the congress as they pleased and at the same time provided excellent networking opportunities. Likewise, further details about exhibitors, their products and placements popped up at the simple touch of a screen.


Once again the three best junior speakers were honoured with the Auto Electronic Excellence Award.

ELIV 2015 – Trend topics in the focus 

No matter whether inductive or direct or powered with up to 800 volt DC or AC, the statement that echoed through all lectures on electromobility was: “Battery charging times will be considerably shorter in future“. In terms of cell technology, the lithium-ion battery will still remain state-of-the-art for some years. Additionally, price, weight and volume of the batteries will continue to go down and the CO2 emission will be reduced short term by the 48-Volt-technology.

Automated Driving and Car2X-Communication is a vast area for car manufacturers and suppliers. It does provide amenities, but it also means a higher safety level for passengers travelling in the car. First steps have already been taken with the parking sensors which allow you to park autonomously or remote-controlled. You might even obtain training in how to park properly. High-precision positioning which is able to handle distances of less than one metre, e.g. inside multi-storey car parks is enhanced by radio landmarks and sensors like stereo cameras, radar, lidar as well as lane markings and object data form the data base for Automated Driving.

New business models are being developed with Connected Car where new partners like Google and Apple are entering the automotive market. Smartphone and app connection in the vehicle will have to meet all requirements in terms of quality, security and costs. There is a mutual benefit of driver assistance systems and online enriched road maps where precision, safety and convenience play a key role. The mentioned digitalisation of the business shifts the focus towards precise data, software updates, data security and data distribution.

In addition to software and the corresponding architecture of the vehicle wiring system,  the  lighting technology was also addressed in Baden-Baden. To guarantee networked and automated driving, perfect lighting conditions are an essential requirement – particularly with respect to safety. With new  semiconductor light sources like OLED and laser, light distribution and illumination level can be perfectly matched and micromechanic matrix lasers create a highly versatile roadway luminaire. The strong point of LEDs is not just their power-saving capability - high-resolution LED-pixels show a high energy efficiency  and by means of scanning laser beams adaptive headlight systems can be developed which do not only cater for convenience but also safety aspects.


ELIV goes Bonn – World Conference Center Bonn with more capacity and opportunities

The Vehicle Electronics Community is growing steadily: For example, by introducing apps or the Internet itself in the vehicle, the number of industries that are tied to electronics in the vehicle one way or another, is rising.

To account for this circumstance, the ELIV will leave its previous “home town“Baden-Baden and move to Bonn, where it will be held in the newly built World Conference Center Bonn. This venue has only been finished recently and with the move of the ELIV this means that apart from all the UN congresses, another major congress will be held there.

The WCC can host up to 5,000 attendants and offers therefore  considerably more space for the exhibition. Furthermore, it is well connected to public transport: the airports Düsseldorf, Cologne that are close by as well as the ICE station Siegburg/Bonn ensure easy access and allow those attending a comfortable journey.


The VDI Society for Automotive and Traffic Systems Technology (VDI FVT) sees itself as an association which actively networks both technical and industrial engineers representing vehicle engineering, traffic technology and mobility.
